I found your article very interesting as this topic comes up over and over during my Hospitality Undergraduate Studies. The one thing I did not see addressed is the willingness of the employee to relocate. This can have a significant effect on the time period as we have graduates here who have defied the odds and have made it to the GM position in two to five years.

Director of Sales

As a Director of Sales for a large hotel, I am a bit offended by the statement that I am "less ambitious" or that I am "settling" for a Director of Sales position rather than becoming a GM. What if your career goal was to become a Director of Sales or a Director of Rooms? How are you less ambitious than someone who is pursuing a GM position? I understand that the point of the article was to show how to move from a "Bellman to GM"; however, I think it could have been written without offending another position in the hotel industry.
